After Chris’s presentation the floor was open for questions where I had the opportunity to ask the last question for Chris. The other two questions were in the nature of clarification while my question was to the bone in an attempt to shake his world a little. Recently Harvard researchers published the article “Should you invest in the long tail? with an abstract like this: “It was a compelling idea: In the digitized world, there’s more money to be made in niche offerings than in blockbusters. The data tell a different story.”

The new economy began circa 1935 where near zero marginal costs for each additional viewer but very high marginal costs for additional content. Chris highlights that NSync’s second album release in March 2000 and will become the best selling of all time because the distribution model has changed to digital and single songs. The one size fits all does not work anymore which is good for users but bad the record labels. Equally fragmentation is evident for TV where the top 10 average rating shows has declined as the number of channels available has exploded. The fundament for the long tail is therefore present.

Richard Stomp – Streetcombing
Usually ideas do not come to people, though ideation methods are available to facilitate the creative outcome. But, most of the ideation processes is facilitated indoors. Richard thinks that is like putting you head a certain place! Creativity comes from the streets and like those hunting the beaches for amber, streetcombers is hunting for ideas and creativity on the streets. The method requires that the streetcomber takes pictures of everything to capture ideas and inspiration to take home.

Devon began her presentation with a poem about geese which got the attention of the audience.
Everyone and every person is a seed and the road to innovation and change is how that seed become a flower? Devon speaks about the privileges of our lifestyle and devices e.g. mobile, mp3, laptop and that we must have respect and soul of mind to overcome the information overload many are feeling in society. The poetry is able to connect the soul of our minds and re-connect and grow the seed into a flower.

The level of impacts in a room often defines innovation and people achieve significant impact or innovate through idea translations that are rarely straight. The forks in the road are often confusing and frustrating which often terminates the innovation process and the idea. The solution is “artscience” as David states: if art and science are method, this common process – intuitive, image-driven, thriving combines problem solving and creativity.

What drive innovation? The answer…is design. With that opening remark Tom Kelly gives insight on how to innovate. And he states the main problem is that innovation and design is not something you add late in the process. It is a value creator from the begining (hmm, I have heard the same story from engineers when designers talk about technology RED).
